Boat Lift Goes Down But Not Up: What's Actually Failing

A lift that lowers fine and refuses to raise is telling you something specific. One question sorts it into the cheap repair or the expensive one, and the answer takes ten seconds to get.

Answer this first: when you press up, is the lift completely silent, or does it hum, groan or bog down? Silent points at the switch and the wiring. Owners usually call this one in as "my lift motor is going out." It is a reasonable guess and it is usually wrong, because a motor that is truly dying rarely picks a direction. Lift motors on Lake Norman fail less often than the parts around them.

What makes this symptom so useful is that down and up are not the same job. Lowering is gravity-assisted, so the motor barely has to work. Raising asks the motor for full starting torque against the weight of a boat, its fuel, its gear, and whatever water is sitting in it. Anything that shaves off starting torque, or blocks the up command specifically, shows up as a lift that goes down happily and will not come back.

So the diagnosis splits cleanly in two. Get the silent-versus-straining answer and you have already eliminated half the possible causes.

Family 1: silent on "up" (the control side)

Nothing at all when you hold the up button. No hum, no click, no twitch. Down still works normally. The motor is fine. The up command is not reaching it.

  • The drum switch or directional switch. This is the most common single cause of a true one-direction failure. The switch is what reverses the motor, and it lives outdoors in Lake Norman humidity getting operated a few hundred times a season. Contacts pit, corrode and burn on the side you use most. One set of contacts fails, the other still works, and you get exactly this symptom.
  • A corroded or loose connection on one leg. Up and down do not share every wire. A green, chalky or loose terminal inside the control box can take out one direction and leave the other untouched. Splash, condensation and lake air do this constantly on older boxes.
  • A failed contactor or relay. Larger lifts run the motor through contactors. If the up contactor has burned contacts or a dead coil, you may hear a faint click and get nothing, or hear nothing at all.
  • An upper limit switch. Many lifts have a limit switch that cuts the up circuit at the top of travel. If it has drifted out of adjustment, jammed with debris, or corroded closed, the lift thinks it is already at the top and refuses to raise while still lowering normally.
  • The remote receiver, not the lift. Try the manual switch on the post instead of the remote. If the manual switch raises it, your lift is fine and your receiver or transmitter is the problem. This gets misdiagnosed as a dead motor more than anything else on the list.

Family 2: it hums, groans, bogs or trips (the load side)

The motor is getting the command and trying. It cannot finish the job. Now you are looking at torque, voltage or weight.

  • A weak start capacitor. Worth stating honestly, because the internet oversimplifies this: a completely dead capacitor usually kills both directions, since the motor cannot get itself spinning at all. A weak one is the classic down-but-not-up case, because there can be just enough starting torque left to lower a load gravity is already pulling and not enough to raise it. Heat and humidity are hard on capacitors here, and they are a wear item. They also hold a charge with the power off, so this is a tested part, not a guessed one.
  • Voltage drop at the motor. Dock circuits are long runs, often undersized, sometimes extended over the years by whoever owned the house before you. A motor can start unloaded and stall the moment it takes the boat's weight. If your lift got noticeably weaker after other dock loads were added, or it only fails on hot afternoons, voltage is a live suspect.
  • Actual overload, which is more common than owners expect. A cover or canopy holding rainwater after a Carolina thunderstorm can add hundreds of pounds in an hour. So can a bilge that stopped pumping, a full fuel load, or a new boat that is heavier than the one the lift was sized for. The motor is not weak. The load got heavier.
  • Friction in the system. Seized sheaves, dry bearings, a cable that has jumped its groove, or cable that has spooled over itself on the drum all add drag. Down overcomes it with gravity's help. Up does not. A lift that has been getting slower for a season is usually telling you this.
  • Gearbox damage. Motor spins, drum does not, or you hear grinding under the housing. Broken worm gear teeth can jam or slip under load while still passing motion in the easier direction. Keep running it and the gearbox takes the motor with it.

The dividing line inside this family is whether the motor is unable or the lift is overloaded. Both look identical from the switch, which is why we check the boat and the cradle before we open the motor housing.

The 2026 low-water cause nobody checks first

Rule this out before you buy a single part. Lake Norman has run several feet below full pond through the 2026 drought, sitting in the mid nineties on the Duke Energy gauge for much of the summer, and the Catawba-Wateree basin has been under Low Inflow Protocol Stage 2 since May 1, 2026, the first Stage 2 since 2009.

What that does to a lift is simple. A cradle, bunk or lower frame member that used to hang in open water is now sitting in silt or on the lakebed. When you press up, the motor is not lifting a floating boat through water. It is trying to break a loaded cradle out of mud, against suction. It strains, it bogs, it may trip the breaker, and every symptom points at a tired motor that is actually fine.

Shallow coves and the upper end of the lake feel this first. What not to do while you figure this out

  • Do not keep pressing up. Every second of humming is heat in the windings. This is the difference between a control-side repair and a motor replacement, and it happens in minutes.
  • Do not lighten the load by standing on the dock and pulling. If a cable or the cradle lets go, everything moves at once.
  • Do not get under a boat the lift is struggling to hold. A lift that will not raise is a lift you have not confirmed can hold.
  • Do not reset a breaker that trips twice. Repeated trips on a dock circuit are an electrical fault over water. Stop there and read our guide to dock electrical safety and electric shock drowning.
  • Do not "help" it with a come-along or a jack unless you know exactly what is carrying the load. Improvised lifting next to a suspect cable is how people get hurt.
Two-minute check before you call: ① Press up once and note silent versus straining. ② Try the manual switch instead of the remote. ③ Look for standing water in the boat or a canopy holding rain. ④ Look at the cradle: is it in mud or resting on the bottom? ⑤ Look at the cables and the drum for slack, fray or a wrap sitting on top of another wrap. What the repair usually costs

Notice that the cheap repair and the expensive one are frequently the same fault caught at different times. A weak capacitor found on the first hum is a service call. The same capacitor found after twenty minutes of holding the button is a motor.

When to stop and call

  • The boat is on the lift and stuck up there. Priority call. Tell us that on the phone.
  • Any hum without motion. The clock is running on the windings.

  • Grinding, knocking or a burnt smell. Something mechanical is coming apart and the next cycle makes it worse.

Common questions about a lift that goes down but not up

Why would a lift go down but not up?
Because raising takes far more torque than lowering. A silent up button usually means the command is blocked: drum or directional switch, a corroded connection on one leg, a contactor, an upper limit switch, or a dead remote receiver. A humming or bogging up button usually means torque or load: a weak start capacitor, low voltage at the motor, real overload such as rainwater in the boat, added friction, or gearbox damage.
Is it the capacitor?
Maybe, but not automatically. A dead capacitor normally takes out both directions because the motor cannot start at all. A weak one is the classic direction-specific case, since lowering needs less starting torque than lifting. If the lift is silent rather than humming, check the switch and wiring first. Capacitors hold charge with the power off, so have it tested rather than poking at it.
Can I keep trying the up button?
No. A humming motor that is not turning is heating its own windings, and that is what turns a $100 to $350 repair into a $400 to $900 motor replacement. Press it once, note what happens, and stop.
Could low water be the reason?
Very possibly in 2026. With Lake Norman several feet below full pond and the basin under Low Inflow Protocol Stage 2 since May 1, 2026, cradles and bunks that used to hang free are resting in silt. The motor is then fighting mud and suction instead of lifting through water, which mimics a weak motor exactly. Check where the cradle sits before buying parts.
Is a lift that will not raise safe to leave with the boat on it?
Treat it as unknown. A lift that is straining has been loading its cables, sheaves and gearbox harder than normal, and a gearbox or brake that will not lift is not proven to hold either. Keep people out from under the boat, do not cycle it repeatedly, and get it looked at rather than leaving it loaded through a storm.
