Boat Lift Sitting on the Bottom? What to Do (and What Not to Do)
If your cradle is touching the lakebed in this year's low water, the next thing you do decides whether this is a free adjustment or a bent-cradle, cable-and-motor repair. Here's the honest playbook.
Lake Norman is running several feet below full pond through the 2026 drought, and the Catawba-Wateree basin has been under Low Inflow Protocol Stage 2 since May 1, 2026, its first Stage 2 since 2009. For most dock owners the visible sign is a wider mud shoreline and a dock that suddenly reaches out over dry ground. But the expensive sign is quieter: your boat lift, which was set and anchored for normal pond, is now hanging four or five feet lower than the lakebed allows, and the cradle has started to touch bottom.
This is the single most common low-water call we get. The good news is that a lift that is sitting on the bottom is usually fine. A lift that has been run on the bottom, over and over, usually is not. The difference is entirely in what happens next.
Why your lift is on the bottom this year
A boat lift is built to work in a specific band of water. The cradle hangs from cables on a beam or a set of pilings, and at normal pond there is open water under the cradle at its lowest position. Drop the lake four or five feet and that clearance is gone. The cradle beams, the bunks, and sometimes the whole lower frame come down onto the lakebed before the motor thinks the cradle is anywhere near the bottom of its travel.
It hits hardest in the shallow, silty water. The backs of coves and the creek arms around the lake, places like Reed Creek, Mountain Creek, Davidson Creek and the upper end toward the State Park, shallow up fastest and hold the softest mud. If your dock is in one of those shallow entrances in Sherrills Ford, Terrell, The Point, or the back of any cove, your lift is among the first on the lake to touch. Docks out on the deeper main-channel water may not be grounding at all yet.
What NOT to do
- Do not keep cycling the lift. This is the big one. Running the lift down into the mud, and back up, and back down, is what causes almost all the real damage. When the cradle bottoms out, the water stops floating the boat off the bunks and the steel takes the load instead. That is how cradle beams bend, how bunks get shoved out of line, and how the frame racks out of square.
- Do not "power through" a lift that stalls or slows. If the motor is straining, groaning, or the up-button barely moves it, something is fouled or bound. Forcing it strains the gearbox and can stall or burn out the motor. On a lift motor and gearbox, a burnout is a far bigger bill than whatever is jamming it.
- Do not load the boat onto a grounded cradle. Dropping a loaded hull onto a cradle that is already resting on the bottom concentrates the whole weight on the frame instead of the water. That is a bent-cradle recipe.
- Do not ignore slack or jumped cables. When a cradle bottoms out and the drum keeps turning, the cable goes slack and can jump off its drum or pulley. Once a cable is off its groove or wrapped over itself, running the lift can shear it or crush the wrap. Stop and look before you hit the button again.
- Do not wait for the lake to "come back." Nobody knows when it refills. Meanwhile the cradle grinds on the bottom and silt packs into the cables and pulleys. See when will Lake Norman refill for the honest timeline, which is: not on a schedule you can plan a lift around.
What to do, in order
- Raise the cradle off the bottom and stop. Bring it up just enough that the cradle, bunks and boat clear the lakebed at the lowest part of the day, then leave it there. The whole game in low water is keeping the cradle hanging in water or air, never resting on mud.
- If the boat is out, park the empty cradle up. Don't leave an unused cradle sitting in the silt for weeks. Mud and grit work into the cables, pulleys, and bunk carpet and grind them from the inside. Raise it clear.
- Look before you run it again. With the water this low you can actually see the lower frame, the pilings and often the cables. Check for a cradle beam that's bent or a bunk that's been shoved crooked, a cable that has gone slack or jumped its drum, and mud or a stump wedged into the frame. If anything looks off, don't cycle it.
- Get it assessed while the water is down. This is the cheapest time in years to work on a lift, because the parts that normally need a diver or a barge are hanging in the open. A lift can often be re-set to keep working through the drought, but the right move depends on whether it's a cradle beam lift, a cantilever, or a floating hydraulic lift, and how your dock is built.
The damage a grounded lift actually does
When homeowners tell us the lift "just started acting up," this is usually the chain of events, and it starts with grounding:
- Bent cradle steel. Beams and cross-members take load they were never meant to carry and bow or twist. A bent cradle no longer sits a boat level and often won't lift straight.
- Cables off the drum, frayed, or crushed. Slack cable jumps its groove, then gets pinched or over-wrapped. Grit-packed cable also wears from the inside and starts throwing broken strands, the "meat hooks" that tell you the cable is done.
- Gearbox and motor strain. The drive fights a load it can't move, over-torques the gearbox, and stalls or cooks the motor. That's the difference between a boat lift that won't go up or down and one that just needed an adjustment.
- Racked-out frame and pulled anchors. Uneven bottom loading twists the whole lift out of square and can work its footings loose in the lakebed.
Every item on that list is preventable, and the prevention is the same one sentence: don't run it on the bottom.
