How to use this, and the one rule that matters

Every result below ends in the same place, so it is worth saying up front: stop cycling a lift that is behaving strangely. The single most expensive instinct on this lake is running a damaged lift one more time to see whether it still works. If a cable has failed, a drum key has sheared or the frame has moved, that extra cycle is what turns a few hundred dollars into a dropped boat and a bent cradle.

The four things that actually fail on a Lake Norman lift

Freshwater helps you here. There are no marine borers and no salt spray on this lake, so lift failures cluster into a short list rather than the long one a coastal owner deals with.

  • The capacitor. Cheapest, most common, and the one that produces the hum. It sits in a damp box through a Carolina summer and eventually will not deliver the kick the motor needs to start turning.
  • The cables. They live in the wet and dry band, they take every cycle, and they age as a set. Kinks, birdcaging and broken strands are the visible end of a process that started inside the strand.
  • The power path. Breakers, GFCIs, disconnects, switches and junction boxes, all of it outdoors and damp. This is also the category with real safety consequences, which is why our dock electrical safety guide exists.
  • The water level. Not a component, but in 2026 it has been the most common cause of urgent lift calls on Lake Norman. A cradle that grounds out damages cables and racks frames without anything actually breaking first.

Common questions about diagnosing a boat lift

Why won't my boat lift go up?
Four usual suspects: a failed start capacitor, a fault in the up circuit itself (switch, contactor or a corroded connection), a cable that has come off the drum or parted, or simply more weight than the lift can raise because the boat took on water, a cover filled with rain, or the cradle grounded on the bottom. It hums but nothing turns. What is that?
Almost always a failed start capacitor, and the cheapest common failure on this lake. Stop pressing the button. A single-phase motor that hums without turning is drawing locked-rotor current and cooking its own windings, which is how a $150 part becomes a motor replacement.
Can I run the lift with one damaged cable?
No. Cables lose strength before they look bad, and they do not fail gradually once they start going. If a boat is suspended on it, keep everyone out from under the boat and do not cycle the lift. The breaker trips as soon as I press the switch.
Leave it off and treat it as an electrical problem, not a lift problem. A breaker or GFCI tripping immediately has found a fault path, typically a failing winding, a chafed conductor or water in a box. Kill shore power at the house panel rather than the dock switch, keep everyone out of the water near the dock, and call.
My cradle is on the bottom because the lake is low. Is that a repair?
It becomes one if you keep running it. Grounding out puts slack in the cables, and slack cable kinks in one afternoon, then jumps a sheave or spools unevenly when the load returns.
