Every lakefront owner on Lake Norman eventually looks up the lake level, sees a number like 94.38, and has no idea whether that's fine or a crisis. The scale isn't intuitive, Duke doesn't really explain it, and the two numbers you'll see quoted around the lake — "100" and "760" — sound like they contradict each other.
They don't. Here's the whole thing in five minutes.
The two numbers, and why both are right
760 feet is the real-world elevation of Lake Norman at full pond: 760 feet above mean sea level. That's the surveyor's number. It's what shows up on plats, shoreline documents and Duke's project boundary.
100.0 is the same thing on Duke Energy's working scale. Rather than make everyone do arithmetic against 760, Duke calls full pond 100.0 and reports everything relative to it. So:
- 100.0 = full pond = 760 feet above sea level
- 98.0 = two feet below full pond
- 95.0 = five feet below full pond
- 94.38 = a little over five and a half feet below full pond
The single most useful thing to know: subtract the reading from 100 and you have your feet of missing water. That's it. That's the whole trick. It is not depth, it is not sea level, and it is not a percentage — it's a countdown from full.
What "normal" looks like
Duke doesn't hold the lake at 100.0 year round. It manages to a seasonal target that generally sits between about 95.0 and 98.0, higher through the summer recreation season and lower heading into winter so there's storage room for winter and spring runoff. That planned winter drop is the winter drawdown, and it's routine.
So a reading in the mid-90s isn't automatically alarming. What matters is the reading against the target for that date, which is exactly why the Lake View app shows Full, Target and Actual together. Actual sitting a foot under Target in January is normal operations. Actual sitting four feet under Target in June is drought.
Why the number moves day to day
Lake Norman isn't a standalone pond. It's the largest reservoir in Duke Energy's chain on the Catawba-Wateree river system, and the level is the running balance of what flows in versus what goes out for hydro generation at Cowans Ford, drinking water for roughly two million people, and required downstream flow. A dry week upstream shows up here. So does a wet one, eventually.

Drawdown or drought? Two questions settle it
- How far down is it? The planned drawdown is about a foot. Four, five or six feet is not a drawdown, no matter what your neighbor says.
- What month is it? The drawdown happens heading into winter and recovers with spring rain. A deep drop in May, June or July is weather, not scheduling.
Right now it's clearly the second. The Catawba-Wateree basin entered Low Inflow Protocol Stage 2 on May 1, 2026 — the first Stage 2 since 2009 — which shifts the region to mandatory conservation and tells you Duke is managing the whole chain for storage, not for your boat.
What your reading means for your dock
This is the part the gauge won't tell you, because the lake average isn't your slip. Two docks can read the same 94.38 and be in completely different trouble depending on how deep the water was at that dock to begin with. Owners in the backs of the coves, up the creek arms, and in the shallower entrances around Sherrills Ford, Terrell and the upper end feel five feet a lot harder than someone on deep main-channel water off The Point.
What to go look at, today, with a number this low:
- Is the lift cradle touching bottom? If the cradle or bunks reach the lakebed at the fully-down position, stop running the lift all the way down. Bottoming out transfers the load into the cradle steel, throws cables off their drums and strains the motor and gearbox. This is the single most common low-water repair we get called for.
- Are your pilings out of the water? Then you can finally see them. Look for soft or hollow wood at the old waterline, exposed rebar or spalling on concrete, and washed-out material at the base. Our seawall and piling page walks the failure signs.
- Is anything leaning, racking or sitting crooked? Floating docks that ground out and gangways at angles they weren't designed for both bend hardware quietly and expensively.
- Is your seawall showing undermining? Low water exposes scour at the toe of the wall, which is the failure you cannot normally see and the one that gets worst if ignored.
